    "Studies of bilingual behavior have been proliferating for decades, yet short shrift has been given to its major manifestation, the incorporation of words from one language into the discourse of another. This volume redresses that imbalance by going straight to the source: bilingual speakers in their social context. Building on more than three decades of original research based on vast quantities of spontaneous performance data and a highly ramified analytical apparatus, Shana Poplack characterizes the phenomenon of lexical borrowing in the speech community and in the grammar, both synchronically and diachronically. In contrast to most other treatments, which deal with the product of borrowing (if they consider it at all), this book examines the process: how speakers go about incorporating foreign items into their bilingual discourse; how they adapt them to recipient-language grammatical structure; how these forms diffuse across speakers and communities; how long they persist in real time; and whether they change over the duration. Attacking some of the most contentious issue in language mixing research empirically, it tests hypotheses about established loanwords, nonce borrowings and code-switches on a wealth of unique datasets on typologically similar and distinct language pairs. A major focus is the detailed analysis of integration: the principal mechanism underlying the borrowing process. Though the shape the borrowed form assumes may be colored by community convention, Poplack shows that the act of transforming donor-language elements into native material is universal. Emphasis on actual speaker behavior coupled with strong standards of proof, including data-driven reports of rates of occurrence, conditioning of variant choice and measures of statistical significance, make Borrowing an indispensable reference on language contact and bilingual behavior.     Die zona bonaerense ist eine der wenigen Regionen innerhalb der spanischsprachigen Welt, in denen die Entwicklung der Palatale zur Koexistenz einer stimmhaften und stimmlosen präpalatalen Lautvariante geführt hat und dem Sprachraum damit aus phonetischer Sicht eine Sonderstellung zukommen lässt. Dies ist zwar ein bekanntes und bereits vielfach abgehandeltes Thema, das jedoch nichts an Aktualität eingebüßt hat: Es handelt sich um ein höchst dynamisches Phänomen, das nicht nur mit Blick auf Argentinien insgesamt auf neue Regionen übergreift, sondern das sich vor allem in Wechselwirkung mit einem von Mobilität geprägten Sprachraum wie der Stadt nach wie vor im Wandel befindet. Inwieweit lassen sich innerhalb einer Metropole aber tatsächlich räumlich gebundene Unterschiede in der Präsenz einzelner lautlicher Varianten ausmachen? Die vorliegende Studie geht dieser Fragestellung nach und fokussiert aus diasystematischer Perspektive die synchrone Distribution von ʒeísmo und ʃeísmo in der argentinischen Hauptstadt Buenos Aires. Dabei liegt ihr eine stadtdialektologisch und soziolinguistisch ausgerichtete empirische Untersuchung zu Grunde, die die lautlichen Realisierungen verschiedener Sprechergruppen, welche als barrio-charakteristische Größe jeweils ein spezifisches Fragment des jeweiligen Stadtteillebens repräsentieren, in den Blick nimmt. Die Ergebnisse werden kartographisch aufbereitet und vor dem theoretischen Hintergrund bisheriger und teils kontrovers diskutierter Forschungsbeiträge wissenschaftsgeschichtlich eingebettet und bewertet.     This paper considers reported speech of slaves in court records from the island of St Helena in the South Atlantic. It constitutes some of the earliest evidence of slaves' language anywhere, and shows that the early slave community on the island of St Helena spoke a creoloid, as well as non-standard Southern English. Nothing is known about the personal history of the slaves apart from some of their names.     Die Studien entwerfen ein neues Bild der historischen deutschen Studentensprache, indem sie authentische In-group-Texte, wie Lieder, Stammbuch-Memorabilien, Briefe und Komments, daneben aber auch Vernehmungsprotokolle und andere universitäre Aktenstücke heranziehen und diese funktional im Kontext der studentisch-akademischen Lebensform interpretieren. Die Schwerpunkte der Analysen liegen einmal auf den gruppensprachlichen Charakteristika einzelner Texttypen, zum andern auf interaktionalen Mustern, die der Regulierung der Beziehungen in der Gruppe dienten, wie 'Beleidigung und Ehrenwahrung' oder 'Brüderschaft trinken'. Dabei wird auch das Verhältnis von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit unter verschiedenen Aspekten beleuchtet. Theoretisch-methodisch kommen Sprachhandlungs- und Gesprächsanalyse, Textsorten- und Variationslinguistik sowie Sprachstilistik zum Einsatz. Zentrale Kategorien sind 'Interaktionsmuster', 'Praktik', 'Interaktionsroutine' und 'Interaktionsmodell', die Ludwig Wittgensteins Begriff des 'Sprachspiels' nahestehen, hier aber handlungstheoretisch präzisiert und konkret erprobt werden. Insgesamt versteht sich die Arbeit als Beitrag zu einer pragmatisch ausgerichteten Sprachgeschichtsforschung The studies develop a new historical image of language use by German students, juxtaposing an analysis of authentic texts with specific patterns of student life. A focus is placed on the characteristics of text types such as song and memorabilia, in conjunction with patterns of interaction, such as insult and satisfaction.
