This book presents: the results of an empirical analysis of the new phenomenon of virtual clusters (VCs), which highlight the dynamics of these emerging innovation networks in the digital economy and the challenges that this dynamics represents for the conventional theories, which are unable to define a comprehensive framework that supports the development of these networks; an overview of the most significant theoretical approaches to innovation networks, and their rethinking in the digital economy scenario. Following a neo-Schumpeterian approach, a particular focus is on the opportunity to integrate the economic benefits coming from the geographical proximity, with the advantages related to the "organizational proximity" allowed by the ICT networks; the constituent points of a strategy aimed at sustaining the developing processes of a VC in a drawback region, and a description of the e-Salento project, an application of this strategy to an Italian drawback region, the Salento. Some general implications of the project for theory and practice are also discussed; and the architecture and the master plan of two initiatives within the e-Salento project, concerning the agribusiness and tourism sectors. A model of leadership, to guide innovation in an organisation competing in the digital economy, including both firms and regions. The perspective advanced in this work addresses issues concerned with VC growth and regions' economic development processes that are common to both the regional studies and the innovation management literature; the text represents an important empirically grounded contribution to them. Furthermore, several scholars argue that new development models are emerging for firms and regions. There is a lack of published work that provides empirical grounding and/or analytical models of firms' and regions' development processes in the Net Economy

    Den regionalen Sparkassen und Kreditgenossenschaften gelang es, die Kreditvergabe an Unternehmen in der Finanzkrise zu steigern, während Groß- und Landesbanken Kredite kürzten. Entsprechend wird international die Bedeutung regionaler Banken diskutiert. Der Einführungsband zum Thema „Banken und Raum“ betrachtet die Varianzen zwischen Bankensystemen (viele kleine regionale Banken vs. wenige Großbanken) und diskutiert die Bedeutung von Banken für die regionale Entwicklung und umgekehrt. Aus raum-, sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Perspektive wird die räumliche Dimension zur Klassifizierung von Bankensystemen eingeführt. Es wird die Frage erörtert, wie es den relativ kleinen regionalen Banken gelingt, im Wettbewerb zu bestehen, und argumentiert, dass Dezentralität ihren Erfolg miterklärt. Die Fallstudien zweier Sparkassen sowie diverse Datenanalysen zeigen auf, wie regionale Banken Kredite vergeben, und deuten an, vor welchen Herausforderungen sie in Zeiten niedriger Zinsen stehen. Regional German savings and cooperative banks approved and advanced loans to companies during the financial crisis, while large banks cut back on lending. Given its ability to mitigate credit crunches, Germany’s regional banking system is considered a role model. This textbook debates the variations in banking systems (many small banks vs. a few large banks) and discusses the role banks play in regional development and vice versa. Considering spatial, social and economic perspectives, the authors develop a spatial classification of banking systems. They discuss the question of how relatively small regional banks withstand global competition by advancing the thesis that the specific decentralised organisation of regional banks partly explains their success. Case studies of two German savings banks and diverse data analyses show how regional banks make business loans. Empirical findings also indicate the challenges regional banks face in times of low interest rates.
