In this illuminating new theory of grammar, Hubert Haider demonstrates that there is a basic asymmetry in the phrase structure of any language, whatever sentence structure it takes. Moreover, he argues that understanding this asymmetry is the key to understanding the grammatical causality underlying a broad range of core syntactic phenomena. Until now, Germanic languages have been seen to fall into two distinct classes: those which take an object-verb sentence structure (OV) or a verb-object one (VO). However, by examining the nature of this universal underlying asymmetry, Hubert Haider reveals a third syntactic type: 'Type III'. In particular, he employs the third type to explore the cognitive evolution of grammar which gave rise to the structural asymmetry and its typological implications. Symmetry Breaking in Syntax will appeal to academic researchers and graduate students involved in comparative and theoretical syntax and the cognitive evolution of grammar What breaks the symmetry in syntactic structuring -- Linearizations are public, structures are private -- BBC -- asymmetry in phrase structuring -- The cross-linguistic impact of the BBC -- The Germanic OV/VO split -- Adverbial positions in VO and in OV -- Elements of the third kind -- resultative predicates and particles in OV and VO -- Asymmetry in nominal structures -- word and phrase structure -- BBC or LCA? -- Fact finding and evaluation

The book consists of two parts and an appendix. In the first part, the oldest historical, linguistic, epigraphic, and archaeological traces of Germanic-speaking peoples are summarized. In the second part, the Germanic languages are introduced from the standpoint of their historical development from tribal past to modern dialects, followed by etymologies of the corresponding ethnonyms. The epigraphic period of Germanic history is set forth with examples of early runic inscriptions and their interpretations. Examples of literary texts and surveys of literary history supplement the development of each literary language. The Appendix consists of diagrams depicting the taxonomic position of the Germanic family and its internal classification; a sketch of comparative phonetics and morphology; several longer Latin texts with translations; and finally tables with variants of Runic and Gothic scripts

This book offers a comparative study of the Germanic languages. It promotes a new approach to the OV vs. VO classification, according to which all clauses have a universal base where the internal argument is always merged in SpecVP. Word order differences and their correlates result from an interaction of checking conditions, the EPP and different types of verb movement, and from parametric variation concerning the location of the subject of predication in the I- or in the C-system. In the discussion of a range of impersonal constructions in German, Dutch, Afrikaans, Yiddish, Icelandic, the Ma

The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 21st and 22nd Comparative Germanic Syntax Workshop held at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Stuttgart. The contributions provide insightful discussions of several topics of current interest for syntactic theory on the basis of comparative data from a wide range of contemporary and historical Germanic languages. The theoretical issues explored include: the left periphery, with a number of contributions touching on the pros and contras of cartographic accounts; different aspects of word order and how
