    An der Wende vom 17. zum 18. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich Halle zu einem der wichtigsten Lern- und Vermittlungsorte für Fremdsprachen in Mitteleuropa. An den von August Hermann Francke gegründeten Glauchaschen Anstalten wurden Schüler in alten Sprachen und lebenden Fremdsprachen unterrichtet, religiöse Texte übersetzt sowie Missionare für den Einsatz in Osteuropa, Indien und Nordamerika rekrutiert und ausgebildet. Die Universität Halle bot fremdsprachlichen Unterricht an und Professoren der Universität traten als Vermittler von Literaturen anderer Sprachen hervor. 0Der von Mark Häberlein und Holger Zaunstöck herausgegebene Sammelband behandelt die vielfältigen sprachlichen und kulturellen Beziehungen Halles mit West- und Osteuropa sowie mit der außereuropäischen Welt im 18. Jahrhundert anhand der im Zentrum stehenden Thematik des Fremdsprachenlernens

    Philology was everywhere and nowhere in classical South Asia. While its civilizations possessed remarkably sophisticated tools and methods of textual analysis, interpretation, and transmission, they lacked any sense of a common disciplinary or intellectual project uniting these; indeed they lacked a word for 'philology' altogether. Arguing that such pseudepigraphical genres as the Sanskrit 'puranas' and tantras incorporated modes of philological reading and writing, Cox demonstrates the ways in which the production of these works in turn motivated the invention of new kinds of 'sastric' scholarship. Combining close textual analysis with wider theoretical concerns, Cox traces this philological transformation in the works of the dramaturgist Saradatanaya, the celebrated Vaisnava poet-theologian Venkatanatha, and the maverick Saiva mystic Mahesvarananda

    We describe an immersive art installation, Handjabber, which is inspired by research in gesture and nonverbal communication. It explores how people use their bodies to communicate and collaborate, specifically via metaphoric gesture, interpersonal space, and orientation. In the piece, participants' individual and collective actions give rise to immediate changes in their perceptual environment. These changes are designed to highlight communicative aspects of experience that often go unnoticed in everyday life, allowing both participants and observers to gain a deeper understanding of how they naturally use their bodies to communicate. We describe artistic motivations, theoretical inspirations and technical details. We also discuss how people have experienced the piece.
