Experiences of Philology and Replication is a collection of original papers exploring the textual and material aspects of inks and ink-making in a number of premodern cultures (Babylonia, the Graeco-Roman world, the Syriac milieu and the Arabo-Islamic tradition) The volume proposes a fresh and interdisciplinary approach to the study of technical traditions, in which new results can be achieved thanks to the close collaboration between philologists and scientists. Replication represents a crucial meeting point between these two parties: a properly edited text informs the experts in the laboratory who, in turn, may shed light on many aspects of the text by recreating the material reality behind it. br/>

In Niemand zu Gast? Hospitalitt im Werk Franz Kafkas wird eine in Kafkas Literatur vorzufindende kommunikationstheoretische Umdeutung der Erkenntnistheorie Immanuel Kants nachgewiesen. Fr diese Umdeutung ist wesentlich, dass Kafka die von Kant in seiner Argumentation gegen eine mgliche Gegenwart von Geistern hervorgehobene Unterscheidung zwischen permeablen und undurchdringlichen materiellen Substanzen verwirft. Kafka ist sich mehr als bewusst darber, dass das von Kant als Krankheit verachtete Geistersehen fr das Verfassen eines Briefes sowie fr jegliche Kommunikation mit nicht krperlich anwesenden Kommunikationspartnern notwendig ist. Im Gegensatz zu Kant setzt er sich mit der Existenz von Zeichen und Medien in ihrer Wirkung auf den Menschen auseinander. Er inszeniert sie als Besucher, die seine Protagonisten ansprechen, mit ihnen spazieren gehen, auf den Trschwellen ihrer Hauseingnge stehen oder als erwartete, wenn auch gespenstige Gste in ihre Zimmer eintreten

    Modern Ecopoetry: Reading the Palimpsest of the More-Than-Human World interrogates how humans' relation to and confrontation with the nonhuman world is captured in or through poetry. It brings together contributions that explore how modern poetry addresses human beings' relationship with the natural world, mirroring some of the most salient ecopoetic approaches to date. This collection is written from very different corners of the globe and significantly adds to the existing body of work because, on the one hand, it continues to focus on the greening of poetry and, on the other, it expands its critical implementation in poets not necessarily included in mainstream literary canons, by setting them side by side regardless of their cultural background

    Introduction : the Isidore-moment, the Liber Iudiciorum, and the schools thesis -- In the beginning : the historyof the historiography of Isidore -- Origins and histories : creating new chains of signification -- The historical Lacunae and Damnatio[nes] Memoriae of the Hispana -- Pinnacle and twilight : the Liber Iudiciorum and the "historical" fulfillment of the Isidore-moment -- Conclusion. "Isidore of Seville and the "Liber Iudiciorum" establishes a novel framework for re-interpreting the Liber Iudiciorum (LI), the law-code issued in Toledo by the Visigothic king Recceswinth (649/653-672) in 654. The LI was a manifestation of a vibrant dialectical situation, particularly between two networks of authority, Isidore-Seville and Toledo-Agali, a defining characteristic of the discourse coloring the fabric of writing in Hispania, c. 600-660. To more fully imagine the meaning, significance and purposes of the LI, this book elicits this cooperative competition through a series of four case-studies on writing in the period. In addition to offering an alternative historiography for the LI, this book expands the corpus of "Visigothic Literature" and introduces what the author refers to as "Gothstalgie.""--

Einen Blick in das verlorene Paradies werfen, den eigenen Tod erleben – nirgends scheint die Relativität von Zeit und Raum greifbarer zu sein als im Traum. Der Band beleuchtet dieses Phänomen aus literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher, philosophischer und psychologischer Perspektive. Träume wurden in der Kulturgeschichte immer wieder als „anderer“ Erfahrungsmodus begriffen, in dem die Logik des Wachzustands zum Teil aufgehoben ist. Jahrtausendealter Traditionen visueller Poesie ungeachtet ist die Lyriktheorie noch immer dominant phonozentrisch geprägt. Gegen diese Tendenz richtet die Autorin ihre zentrale These von der Eigenbedeutung lyrischer Schriftlichkeit und erarbeitet ein dezidiert lautsprachenneutrales Konzept der Gedichtschrift jenseits ausgestellter (etwa notationeller, ikonischer oder ideographischer) Visualität. Andrevon propose une nouvelle vision du fantastique ancré profondément dans le quotidien contemporain, en apparence monotone et banal, dans lequel évoluent aussi bien ses personnages que ses lecteurs. L'auteur révèle ainsi le revers angoissant du monde, qui devient une source d'horreur puissante car familière au lecteur : catastrophes naturelles (pandémies mystérieuses, désastres climatiques, fin de l'Anthropocène) et historiques (guerres, totalitarismes), problèmes sociaux et psychologiques (folie, psychoses collectives, solitude). Un signe emblématique du fantastique andrevonien est également son dialogue avec le cinéma d'horreur. Le nouveau fantastique de Jean-Pierre Andrevon analyses the uncanny facets of the fantastic by Jean-Pierre Andrevon, a contemporary writer called "the French Stephen King" or "the French H.P. Lovecraft". Andrevon presents a new vision of the fantastic, deeply rooted in contemporary everyday life, seemingly monotonous and banal, in which both his characters and his readers evolve.     In Fernando Pessoas modernistischem Hauptwerk in Prosa, seinem Buch der Unruhe wird die »Unruhe« zum wichtigsten Zug dieses fragmentarischen Schreibens. Das Unternehmen der Fragmente lässt sich darin zusammenfassen, dass sie die Unruhe als Inbegriff des Literarischen lesbar machen. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt die Passivität und Unruhe für das Schreiben Pessoas in den Blick, das sich hierin in ein komplexes Verhältnis zur literarischen und philosophischen Tradition (Augustinus, Montaigne und besonders Pascal) setzt und zugleich auf poststrukturalistische Theorien des Schreibens (Barthes, Blanchot) weist. Mit der Befragung einer »Poetik der Unruhe« geht die Studie der Frage nach, inwiefern sich die moderne Literatur als etwas fassen ließe, das gerade auch als Kritik der Philosophie ein Denken vollzieht, das allein an diesem Ort des Schreibens, nämlich nur in seinem poetischen Vollzug der Passivität erfolgen kann: Die Studie behauptet für dieses Schreiben eine hierfür eingebrachte »Pathopoiesis«, eine poetische Hervorbringung also von páthos als Bedingung wie Erfahrung literarischen Schreibens

Der Band beleuchtet dieses Phänomen aus literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher, philosophischer und psychologischer Perspektive. Gegen diese Tendenz richtet die Autorin ihre zentrale These von der Eigenbedeutung lyrischer Schriftlichkeit und erarbeitet ein dezidiert lautsprachenneutrales Konzept der Gedichtschrift jenseits ausgestellter (etwa notationeller, ikonischer oder ideographischer) Visualität. Auf dieser Basis untersucht sie die elementare Schriftpoetik des deutschsprachigen Lyrikers Thomas Kling. Andrevon propose une nouvelle vision du fantastique ancré profondément dans le quotidien contemporain, en apparence monotone et banal, dans lequel évoluent aussi bien ses personnages que ses lecteurs. L'auteur révèle ainsi le revers angoissant du monde, qui devient une source d'horreur puissante car familière au lecteur : catastrophes naturelles (pandémies mystérieuses, désastres climatiques, fin de l'Anthropocène) et historiques (guerres, totalitarismes), problèmes sociaux et psychologiques (folie, psychoses collectives, solitude). Un signe emblématique du fantastique andrevonien est également son dialogue avec le cinéma d'horreur. Le nouveau fantastique de Jean-Pierre Andrevon analyses the uncanny facets of the fantastic by Jean-Pierre Andrevon, a contemporary writer called "the French Stephen King" or "the French H.P. Lovecraft". Andrevon presents a new vision of the fantastic, deeply rooted in contemporary everyday life, seemingly monotonous and banal, in which both his characters and his readers evolve. It brings together contributions that explore how modern poetry addresses human beings' relationship with the natural world, mirroring some of the most salient ecopoetic approaches to date. In Interrogations of Evolutionism in German Literature 1859-2011 Nicholas Saul offers the first representative account of German literary responses to Darwinian evolutionism from Raabe and Jensen via Ernst Jünger and Botho Strauss to Dietmar Dath. Often identified with National Socialist ideology and hence notably absent from the public sphere after 1945, Darwinian thought is in fact shown to be distorted though the lens of Social Darwinism and bionationalist organicism. As Nicholas Saul shows, literature has been the main agent in public discourse for challenging such illiberal presentations, and there is a common thread of salvific individualism which leads to the new legitimacy of Darwinian discourse today"--
