In March 2014, the University of Delaware's Resident Ensemble Players staged the first Part of Goethe's Faust, adapted and directed by Heinz-Uwe Haus, which forms the centrepiece and raison d'etre of this book. This book tracks the creative process of Haus's adaptation of the play and his attempts to elicit responses from his international networks to his question: how is Goethe's Faust relevant today? It brings together comments from stage and costume designers as they brought their own creativity and understanding of the audience to bear on the play, and presents a brief record of the production itself, through stage directions and the photography of Bill Browning. The book then explores the reactions the production has elicited amongst some of its audience

Goethe's career was an unusually long and productive one: he became a literary celebrity in the 1770s and remained so until his death in 1832. The distinguishing feature of his last works is their self-consciousness, their preoccupation both with the business of writing and with personal development. In the first cross-genre study of this period of Goethe's work, Charlotte Lee traces the theme in his last major poems and autobiographical writings, before turning to the two 'giants', 'Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre' and 'Faust II'. All these works share a tendency to allude subtly to earlier moments from Goethe's own literary output, but to fashion them into writing which is quite new - even though (or perhaps because) he himself is old. This book seeks to understand the unique perspective of one nearing the end of a long life

Zusammenfassung: It's the fifteenth century and only heretics are curious about the universe. Germany, 1494. Born under a rare alignment of the stars, Johann Georg Gerlach, the lucky one to his mother--is fated for greatness. But Johann's studies and wonder at the sky has made him suspect. Especially in wake of the child disappearances that have left the God-fearing locals trembling and his one true love trapped in terrified catatonia. Her only words: "I have seen the devil...." Banished from Knittlingen as cursed, Johann crosses paths with Tonio del Moravia. The traveling fortune-teller and master of the arcane arts recognizes something extraordinary in the wanderer. Taking Johann under his wing, Tonio promises a new world of knowledge and sensations. But with it comes a sinister web of deception and a chilling prophecy. The stars are set to align again. Now Johann must draw on the skills of his apprenticeship to solve the dark mystery that grips his village in fear and the deepening mystery of his own destiny.
