Lanzelet is an enigmatic piece of Arthurian literature. Composed soon after 1194, it is the second German Arthurian romance. It was based on a French model, now lost, which could have been part of an 'old' hardly accessible Arthurian tradition, so that Lanzelet is a key text in the early history of Arthurian romance. In addition, however, its fascinating literary facture means that a text which was long undervalued is now a central element in Arthurian research. The student edition provides the text and a translation, together with the abridged critical apparatus of the 'large' new edition. Florian Kragl, Universität Wien, Österreich. '[...] Kragl's work will surely remain the definitve treatment of Ulrich's Lanzelet for decades to come. The enormity of Kragl's vehicle - the comprehensive scope of the various registers, indices, commentaries, critical apparatuses, transcriptions, etc. - represents a most remarkable forum (indeed, one of which most philologists can only dream) for virtually all of the innumerableminutiae attendant to the Lanzelet text.'
