The Joseph Johnson letterbook' is the first scholarly edition of the correspondence of the influential Romantic-era publisher Joseph Johnson (1738-1809). Though those in Romantic-era studies know who Joseph Johnson was and why he mattered, but this adventurous, influential publisher and bookseller is not as widely known outside the field. Moreover, he has tended to appear in Romantic studies chiefly as a reference point in work on other figures. 'The Joseph Johnson letterbook', the first scholarly edition of his correspondence, offers a long overdue correction. Working with writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Joseph Priestly, Elizabeth Hamilton, William Blake, Charlotte Smith, and William Godwin (among many others), Johnson was the dynamic center of the London dissenting community, publishing and selling all manner of writing, all the while hosting parties and suppers that were sites of vital conversation. 'The Joseph Johnson letterbook' brings into print for the first time over two hundred of Johnson's letters from archives around the world

In Die Rifāīya Boris Liebrenz explores the book culture of Ottoman Syria (16th to 19th century), using the only surviving Damascene private library of the time as a vantage point. He asks about the production and transmission of knowledge as well as the social background of the reading audience in a manuscript age. Scholarship on Arabic libraries has often focussed on the medieval period and relied nearly exclusively on literary accounts. This is the first book-length study that focuses on a single region in the Ottoman period and systematically uses the vast number of surviving manuscripts as a documentary source by means of the notes left by their readers and possessors. Aus den Aufbrüchen der 1968er Jahre heraus entstanden bundesweit unzählige linke Verlage und Buchläden. Mit Klassikern des Marxismus und Schlüsseltexten der Studentenbewegung prägten sie in den 1970er Jahren wesentlich die politische Kultur der alten Bundesrepublik. Uwe Sonnenberg untersucht Entstehung, Charakter und Wandel dieses Buchhandels. Dabei nimmt der Autor mit dem Verband des linken Buchhandels (VLB) einen wenig bekannten, bislang einzigartigen Zusammenschluss in den Fokus. Gegründet 1970 vereinigte er parteiunabhängige, kollektiv betriebene Verlage, Druckereien, Vertriebe und Auslieferungen. Er besetzte Begriff und Praxis dieses Bewegungsbuchhandels und bildete ein eigenes politisch-literarisches Feld und einen eigenständigen ökonomischen Sektor. Bundesweit waren zwischen 150 und 200 Projekte im VLB engagiert. Sonnenberg zeigt, wie die von den linken Buchhandelsunternehmen produzierte und vertriebene Literatur, Weltbilder und Denkweisen ihrer Produzenten und Rezipienten prägte

An innovative study bringing together the intellectual and material traditions of Englands early press, from William Caxton to Thomas Berthelet. 0This volume offers a new intellectual framework for early print that bridges divisions between the study of print and the study of literature, between manuscripts and printed books, and between pre- and post-1500 textual cultures. Through an extensive focus on medieval texts and ideas, it is demonstrated here that in the half-century before the Reformation, English print was part of a highly energetic tradition of late medieval textual production. Central to this tradition was the expression of ethical agency, or moral entente, through the creation of texts and books. This insight reveals how the first English printed books expressed the deliberate moral and cultural commitments of individual printers. By following early print across a range of genres (history writing, religious instruction, hagiography, law books, and translation), this study also sheds light on the contexts within which the agencies of early printers mattered, including mercantile politics, civic and statute law, and theological economics. The volume, which treats the pre-Reformation press as a whole, is based in particular on the bibliographical evidence provided in editions by William Caxton, Wynkyn de Worde, Richard Pynson, John Rastell, and Thomas Berthelet, as well as on close readings of texts and contextual materials. The questions raised here, however, are about more than old books and early printers: ultimately, this study argues that the history of the material book is an intellectual history of agency and textual production
