    "This present volume is the second in an integrated series of three and focused on the literacies of nuns in medieval Europe, brings together specialists working on diverse geographical areas to create a dialogue about the Latin and vernacular texts nuns read, wrote, and exchanged from the eighth to the mid-sixteenth centuries. The present volume is the second in a series of three integrated publications, the first produced in 2013 as 'Nuns' Literacies in Medieval Europe: The Hull Dialogue'. Like that volume, this collection of essays, focused on various aspects of nuns' literacies from the late seventh to the mid-sixteenth century, brings together the work of specialists to create a dialogue about the Latin and vernacular texts that were read, written, and exchanged by medieval nuns. It investigates literacy from palaeographical and textual perspectives, evidence of book ownership and exchange, and other more external evidence, both literary and historical. To highlight the benefits of cross-cultural comparison, contributions include case studies focused on northern and southern Europe, as well as the extreme north and west of the region. A number of essays illustrate nuns' active engagement with formal education, and with varied textual forms, such as the legal and epistolary, while others convey the different opportunities for studying examples of nuns' artistic literacy. The various discussions included here build collectively on the first volume to demonstrate the comparative experiences of medieval female religious who were reading, writing, teaching, composing, and illustrating at different times and in diverse geographical areas throughout medieval Europe"--P.     The first lessons we learn in school can stay with us all our lives, but this was nowhere more true than in the last decades of the fourteenth century when grammar-school students were not only learning to read and write, but understanding, for the first time, that their mother tongue, English, was grammatical. The efflorescence of Ricardian poetry was not a direct result of this change, but it was everywhere shaped by it. This book characterizes this close connection between literacy training and literature, as it is manifest in the fine and ambitious poetry by Gower, Langland and Chaucer, at this transitional moment. This is also a book about the way medieval training in grammar (or grammatica) shaped the poetic arts in the Middle Ages fully as much as rhetorical training. It answers the curious question of what language was used to teach Latin grammar to the illiterate. It reveals, for the first time, what the surviving schoolbooks from the period actually contain. It describes what form a "grammar school" took in a period from which no school buildings or detailed descriptions survive. And it scrutinizes the processes of elementary learning with sufficient care to show that, for the grown medieval schoolboy, well-learned books functioned, not only as a touchstone for wisdom, but as a knowledge so personal and familiar that it was equivalent to what we would now call "experience."

    Through case studies of a broad variety of medieval and early modern sources, this volume discusses whether the roots of modern notions of individuality can be found in pre-modern Europe. "Individuality" is one of the central categories of modern society. Can the roots of modern individuality be found in pre-modern times? Or is our way of thinking about ourselves a very recent phenomenon? This book takes a theoretical approach to the problem, derived from Niklas Luhmann's system theory, in which different forms of individuality are linked to different structures of society in modern and pre-modern times. The papers in this volume approach this problem by discussing a broad variety of medieval and early modern sources, including charters and seals, letters, and naming-practices in a late medieval town. Self-representation is also considered, in "housebooks" and drawings. Textual studies include autobiography in German Humanism, and concepts of individuality and gender in late medieval literary texts.

    Dieser Band ist die erste umfassende Aufsatzsammlung zum Stand der Alphabetisierung im frühneuzeitlichen Deutschland. Durch die Einbeziehung der Auswertung von qualitativen Quellen erweitern diese Studien die statistischen Untersuchungen zur Signierfähigkeit um 1800 zur Erforschung von Schriftlichkeit. Durch ihre Analyse der konkreten Aneignungs- und Gebrauchsformen der Schrift im Alltag nehmen sie die private sowie die gesellschaftliche Seite dieser Schriftlichkeit in den Blick. Als Untersuchungen von Schriftlichkeit als sozialer Praxis stellen sie die Entwicklung der Schriftkultur in die enge Wechselwirkung mit zentralen Prozessen der frühneuzeitlichen Geschichte. This volume is the first large-scale collection of articles on the spread of literacy in early modern Germany. By drawing additionally on the evaluation of qualitative sources, these studies extend the existing statistic surveys on the ability to sign one's name around 1800 into research on the ability to write in a more general sense. With their analysis of the actual forms of the acquisition and use of writing in everyday life, they encompass both the private and the social dimensions of writing. As investigations into writing as social practice they point up the close interplay between the evolution of written culture and processes central to the history of the early modern age.
