Mit »tiefer, unverbrüchlicher Empathie« (Richard Ford) erzählt Edna O'Brien von einem langen Weg zurück ins Leben, von unvermuteter Hilfsbereitschaft und Mitgefühl. Den kriegerischen Wirren setzt sie die Schönheit der Natur entgegen und gibt der traumatisierten Seele ihre Würde zurück. Aber ist für Maryam überhaupt eine Heimkehr möglich, gibt es doch dort, wo sie einmal zuhause war, keine Sprache für das, was sie durchlebt hat? Für ihren kunstvollen, mutigen Roman hat Edna O'Brien in den letzten Jahren Nigeria bereist und das Schicksal der entführten Mädchen eingehend recherchiert.
