    The important contribution of Heinrich Isaac (ca. 1455-1517) to polyphonic settings of the proper of the mass has long been recognised. The monumental posthumously published collection of his work in the genre, the Choralis Constantinus, was considered as a landmark even in the sixteenth century. Isaac's striking cultivation of polyphonic mass proper settings has its roots in his task, as Hofcomponist to Emperor Maximilian I, of building a musical repertoire for the Imperial court chapel. The repertoire he created awakened a demand for analogous music at other European courts and institutions and led, in 1508, to the commissioning of an extraordinary series of proper cycles from him by the authorities of Constance Cathedral

    "Petrus Imhoff, alias Alamire (c. 1470-1536), was the mastermind behind more than sixty wonderfully illuminated music manuscripts. Following in the footsteps of an older colleague or predecessor whose identity is now unknown, he headed a scriptorium or workshop with music scribes and illuminators that produced music manuscripts on commission from churches, brotherhoods, sovereigns, and wealthy courtiers. Forty-nine manuscripts still survive complete, distributed throughout Europe, with the remainer preserved as tantalizing fragments. The books are not only a treat for the eyes, but also for the ears: they contain the very best ensemble vocal music - polyphony - from between 1480 and 1535. This book focuses on the seven Alamire manuscripts that are today preserved in Belgium. For eacht manuscripts, the most beautiful pages and illuminations are displayed in high resolution images.     A multidisciplinary collection of twenty essays that examine the debates and controversies around music and theology during the period of the European Reformations from both Catholic and various Protestant perspectives.Throughout the history of the Church, music has regularly been placed under the critical microscope. Nonetheless, the intensity of thought concerning music’s role in the liturgy and in spiritual life in general reached a peak during the period of the European Reformations. This multidisciplinary collection examines the debates and controversies around music and theology during that time from both Catholic and various Protestant perspectives. It includes twenty essays from musicologists, theologians, Biblical scholars, and Church historians that attempt to answer the following questions: What difference did the theological and ecclesiological developments of the sixteenth century make to musical forms and practices? What continuities of practice existed with former times? How was the desire to restore the church to an imagined pristine state manifest in music and liturgy? How did developments in exegesis arising from the massively increased knowledge and access to the Bible in Hebrew and Greek affect the way composers wrote and congregations heard? Why did some reformers embrace music, while others rejected it?
