First published in 1936, The People of Godlbozhits depicts the ordinary yet deeply complex life of a Jewish community, following the fortunes of one family and its many descendants. Set in a shtetl in Poland between the world wars, Rashkin's satiric novel offers a vivid cross-section not only of the residents' triumphs and struggles but also of their dense and complicated web of humanity. With biting humor and acerbic wit, Rashkin portrays the stratified society--the petty bourgeoisie, artisans, and proletariat--observing the crookedness at every level. The novel's brisk and oftentimes lively Yiddish prose and its colorful and irascible cast of characters give readers a Yiddish Yoknapatawpha in all its tragic absurdity.

THE EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY LANGUAGE TEXT OF JUDISCHER SPRACH-MEISTER: A West-Yiddish Dialogue Together with an English Translation and Introduction; Copyright Page; Dedication; Table of Contents; Preface; Acknowledgements; Introduction; Sprach-Meister: Foreword; Sprach-Meister: Text; Glossary; Bibliography Though little studied, this text is important not only for the fields of Yiddish literature and linguistics, where it offers a lengthy continuous text in a language lacking a particularly robust corpus, but also for the history of German-Jewish relations, highlighted by the irony of an anti-Semitic work preserving a Yiddish linguistic resource. The present volume includes a reproduction of the original text in a modern orthography and an English translation, together with an introduction, notes, and a glossary of the many Hebrew words in the text

Introduction: Leyb Naydus, Yiddish argonaut -- 1 Diaspora internationalism -- 2 Judeomeorphism -- 3 "Full of Gold and perfume": Naydus and the sonnet -- 4 Eastward Ho!: Naydus's exoticism and Orientalism -- 5 Conclusion -- Naydus Studies / Naftoli Vaynig -- Bibliography -- Index. Leyb Naydus (1890{u2013}1918) expanded the possibilities of Yiddish poetry via his rich cosmopolitan works, introducing a wealth of themes and forms seldom seen in that language, including some of its first sonnets of literary merit. Literary critic Naftoli Vaynig{u2019}s lengthy essay on Naydus, written in 1943 in the Vilne Ghetto, makes a remarkable case for why the poems of this cosmopolitan aesthete, who died so tragically young, should serve as a fitting emblem for a culture threatened with extinction. Exile as Home, which includes a translation of Vaynig{u2019}s essay, 'Naydus Studies', extends that argument. --
