    Bürger spürt offensichtlich die Herausforderung, die für die Poesie durch die sich im Laufe des 18. Jahrhunderts mit Macht durchsetzende Literalität entsteht. Aus der Auseinandersetzung mit diesem grundlegenden medien- wie sozial- und kulturgeschichtlichen Prozeß bezieht die Lyrik wichtige ästhetische Impulse. Der Roman reagiert mit der Verstärkung dialogischer Erzählformen, also mit inszenierter und fingierter Mündlichkeit. Auch die Entstehung der modernen Hermeneutik läßt sich als Versuch begreifen, das durch die Literalität sich verstärkende Problem der Vieldeutigkeit anders als der mündliche ist der schriftlich bzw. gedruckt verbreitete Text prinzipiell offen für unendlich viele Deutungen in wechselnden sozialen Situationen und Konstellationen einerseits zu theoretisieren, andererseits im leitenden hermeneutischen Modell des Gesprächs zwischen Autor / Text und Leser überhaupt aufzufangen.

    Die Wertschätzung von E.T.A. Hoffmanns Erzählungen, die sich in den letzten Jahren als Spielwiese für mannigfaltige texttheoretische und verwandte Ansätze erwiesen haben, erstreckt sich nach wie vor nicht auf die sogenannten "späten Almanach-Erzählungen". Die im 19. und weiten Teilen des 20. Jahrhunderts vorherrschende Verurteilung von Hoffmanns Werk als effekthaschend und unausgewogen ist für diesen, nicht wie die meisten anderen Erzählungen Hoffmanns in einem Sammelband zusammengefaßten Werkteil bis heute nur in Ansätzen revidiert worden. Diese "moralisch-ästhetischen Ansichten" finden sich in nur leicht modifizierter Form z.B. noch 1988 in Stefan Diebitz Untersuchung der 1822 aus dem Nachlaß veröffentlichen Erzählung "Datura fastuosa", wenn als Kategorie der Abwertung die negative Antwort auf die Frage nach der "Vernünftigkeit des Vorsatzes" gesetzt wird, als hätte nicht gerade das Werk Hoffmanns eine solche Bestimmung bis ins Mark erschüttert. Die Erzählung ist "insgesamt als mißlungen anzusehen", weil Diebitz einen Bruch konstatiert zwischen dem von ihm für die ersten drei Kapitel konstruierten "Vorsatz, die Problematik einer ins Spießige verirrten Existenz" darzustellen und dem letzten Teil des Textes, in dem Hoffmann nach Diebitz "eine zweite und durchaus triviale Geschichte beginnen" läßt.

    Daß die Geschichte der deutschen Literatur auf dem amüsanten Gebiet der Komödie ihrerseits nur wenig Erfreuliches und Gültiges zu bieten hat, gehört seit langem zu den leidigen Gewißheiten der Forschung. Auch die Ausnahmen sind bestens bekannt. Im Gegensatz aber zu Goethe und Schiller, zu Friedrich und August Wil-helm Schlegel (und einer Reihe anderer) scheint einer von dieser Klage durch hö-here Unzuständigkeit freigesprochen. Sein dichterisches Naturell erheischt die produktionspsychologische Forderung nach der Komödie so wenig wie seine philosophisch-theoretischen Grundbegriffe eine solche auch nur zuzulassen scheinen nämlich gar nicht. Die Rede ist von Friedrich von Hardenberg, genannt Novalis.

    In diesem Artikel soll einer der strittigen Vertreter der deutschen Romantik auf zwei verschiedene Weisen analysiert werden, erstens durch Untersuchung des historischen Rahmens seiner antiken Tragödie "Penthesilea", und zweitens, durch den Vergleich des Werkes mit seiner persöhnlichen romantischen Veranlagung, um die traditionellen und historischen Grenzen des Begriffs "Romantik" zu erweitern.

    Vor mehr als zehn Jahren beschrieb ich bereits Theorie und Praxis des Deutschunterrichts an der Universidade Aberta, ein Studienbereich, der 1996 auf Initiative von Maria Laura Bettencourt Pires (Direktorin des Bereichs der Fernstudien do Ensino a Distância) entstanden war. Doch sollte die Umsetzung des Regelwerks von Bologna an unserer Institution noch bis 2007 dauern. Portugal hatte diesen Vorgaben, die einen gemeinsamen europäischen Hochschulraum ermöglichen sollten, bereits 1999 zugestimmt. Sie werden im geänderten Hochschulrahmengesetz von 2005 berücksichtigt. Ihre Einführung an der Universidade Aberta fiel sowohl mit der Methode des E-learnings als auch mit der Einbettung der Germanistik in ein neues Kurssystem zusammen, die u.a. die Semestralisierung der Lehrfächer zur Vorraussetzung hatte. ...

    "Der Prinz von Theben" beinhaltet neun Geschichten ('Miniaturen'). die sich im märchenhaften, teilweise Surrealen, sowohl örtlich, als auch zeitlich nicht weiter definierbaren Orient abspielen. Der Orient wird - auf den ersten Blick aber eben nicht ausschließlich - als stereotyper Schauplatz der Trieb- und Sündhaftigkeit gefasst. Er ist 'das Andere', das Undefinierbare, das 'Surreale' und steht im Gegensatz zum 'geregelten' Abendland. Hier setzt die Lektüre an. Über den theoretischen Zugang von Queertheorien und postkolonialenTheorien wird das gegenseitige Bedingungsverhältnis von kultureller und sexueller Differenz in den Texten durchmessen, literarisch erkundet und die (post-)kolonialen Schreibweisen ausgelotet. Lasker-Schülers Text verfährt zum einen kolonial, d.h., dass der orientalische Ort zur Projektionsfläche für eigene Wünsche, Sehnsüchte wird und einer, vermeintlich im 'anderen' aufgehobenen Identität, Raum gibt. Zugleich wird er zum Schauplatz, an dem im Sinne eines queertheoretischen und postkolonialen Ansatzes sich das Subjekt auf der Basis von zum Teil widersprüchlichen und ungelösten, nicht vereinheitlichenden Aspekten von Identität formiert. In diesem Spannungsfeld, in diesen Momenten der Ambivalenz verschränken sich diese Verfahrensweisen und eröffnen Momente von 'postcolonial-queer'.

    This paper describes the ability of German-Portuguese bilingual siblings to narrate in German. The paper deals with the underlying theory of 'Functional Pragmatics' and describes within this theory the complex verbal pattern of narration in everyday life. In order to do this, a selected corpus will be analysed focussing on the conditions and characteristics of narration. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a capacidade de crianças narrarem em alemão. Como exemplo, observaram-se dois irmãos bilíngües (alemão – português). Na primeira parte, será explicada a teoria da 'Pragmática Funcional', assim como o padrão acional verbal complexo da narração na vida cotidiana. A segunda parte, empírica, explicará as condições e características de uma narração através de um corpus selecionado.

    This article emphasizes that the central element of the satanic pact in Goethe’s Faust is the driving force of modernity: the negation of the present. In contrast to traditional interpretations of Faust as a positive figure and his "striving" as a virtue of modern man, the author argues that the destructive side of Faust’s restlessness should be examined. The effective counterpoints of the rhythm of modernity, as Goethe himself suggests in the play, are religion (in its broader unconventional sense, and classically inspired art, which enable thought to "stop" in the present moment. O artigo enfatiza que um elemento central no pacto demoníaco configurado por Goethe em seu Fausto simboliza também a força motriz da Modernidade: a negação ininterrupta do presente. Diferentemente das interpretações tradicionais que vêem Fausto como figura positiva e a sua aspiração como virtude do homem moderno, o autor expõe a dimensão destrutiva da inquietude fáustica, a qual deve ser questionada pelo público contemporâneo. Na perspectiva do autor, os contrapontos efetivos ao ritmo destrutivo da Modernidade seriam, como o próprio Goethe parece sugerir no drama, a attitude religiosa (em sentido amplo, não convencional) e a arte de inspiração clássica, que propicia a reflexão e o "deter-se" no instante presente.

    Der vorliegende Aufsatz gibt einen Überblick über das syntaktische, prosodische und semantische Verhalten sowie die textuelle Funktion kausaler Konnektoren im heutigen Deutsch. Im ersten Abschnitt wird Textkohärenz in räumliche, zeitliche und kausale Kohärenz unterteilt. Räumliche und zeitliche Kohärenz werden zu einem erheblichen Teil durch grammatische Sprachmittel kodiert, während kausale Kohärenz vor allem durch lexikalische Mittel ausgedrückt wird: durch Präpositionen, Konjunktionen und Adverbien. Im zweiten Abschnitt werden die wichtigsten kausalen Konnektoren des Gegenwartsdeutschen vorgestellt und in ihren syntaktischen und semantischen Haupteigenschaften beschrieben. Der dritte Abschnitt behandelt das linguistische Konzept der Ursache vor dem Hintergrund allgemeinerer philosophischer Reflexionen über Kausalität. Das Konzept der Verursachung wird zurückgeführt auf die zugrundeliegenden Konzepte der Situation und der Bedingung. Der vierte Abschnitt ist der Unterscheidung zwischen drei Arten kausaler Verknüpfungen gewidmet, die als dispositionelle, epistemische und deontisch-illokutionäre bezeichnet werden. Empirisch erlauben kausale Verknüpfungen häufig mehr als eine dieser Lesarten. Die folgenden Unterabschnitte untersuchen im Detail die syntaktischen, prosodischen und semantischen Bedingungen, durch die epistemische und deontische Lesarten kausaler Verknüpfungen möglich werden. Als wichtigste Faktoren, die die Interpretation beeinflussen, werden herausgestellt: syntaktische, prosodische und informationelle Integration der verknüpften Ausdrücke, Definitheit der Ursache sowie modale Umgebungen. This article gives an overview of the syntactic, prosodic and semantic behaviour, as well as of the textual function, of causal connectives in present day German. In the first section, text coherence is divided into the domains of spatial, temporal and causal coherence. Spatial and temporal coherence are to a considerable extent encoded by grammatical means, while causal coherence is mainly encoded by lexical means: prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs. In the second section, the most important causal connectives of present day German are described, and their basic syntactic and semantic properties introduced. The third section deals with the linguistic concept of cause, contextualizing it within more general philosophical considerations on causation. The concept of cause is traced back to the underlying concepts of situation and condition. The fourth section is devoted to the distinction between three types of causal connections, labelled as dispositional, epistemic and deontic/illocutionary. Empirically, there are many cases in which a causal connection between two sentences can receive more than one of these readings. The following subsections examine in more detail the syntactic, prosodic and semantic conditions that render epistemic and deontic readings of causal connections possible. The main factors influencing the interpretation are shown to be syntactic, prosodic and informational integration of the connected expressions, definiteness of the cause as well as modal contexts.

    This study outlines the formation of the category of "modal verb" within the grammaticography of German from the beginnings in the 16th century up to its "canonization" in the first half of the 20th century, also showing certain parallels to the treatment of modal verbs in the grammaticography of Portuguese. It also describes the influence German grammaticography had on the formation of this category in the grammaticography of Portuguese. Este estudo analisa a formação da categoria de "verbo modal" na gramaticografia do alemão, desde as primeiras gramáticas do século XVI até a sua "canonização" na primeira metade do século XX, apontando também para alguns paralelos com o tratamento dos verbos modais na gramaticografia do português, bem como as influências da gramaticografia do alemão sobre a formação desta categoria na gramaticografia do português.

    Wilhelm Voßkamp (University of Cologne) was visiting professor of German Literature at the University of Säo Paulo during the first semestre of 1997.     The present article is a comparative analysis of "Das Parfum" by Patrick Süskind and "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" by Adalbert von Chamisso. The analysis applies Walter Benjamin 's concepts of experience and event to the deep structure of the narratives and the characters and confronts the issue of identity of the modern hero, who is unable to undergo any kind of experience, with the loss of sense that the individual suffers from as a result of the disenchantment of the world. O presente artigo e uma análise comparativa de "Das Parfum" de Patrick Süskind e "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" de Adalbert von Chamisso.
