; Abstract ; This thesis explores the variable behavior of bare nouns in Persian. Bare singular nouns realize different grammatical functions, including subject, object and indirect object. They receive different interpretations, including generic, definite and existential readings. However, the task of understanding the reasons for, and limits on, this variation cannot be achieved without understanding a number of pivotal features of Persian sentential architecture, including Information Structure, prosody, word order, and the functions of various morphological markers in Persian. With respect to the discourse transparency of Incorporated Nominals, under certain circumstances, Persian bare nouns show discourse transparency. These circumstances are examined in chapter 3, and it is proposed that bare nouns do introduce a number neutral discourse referent. This proposal is phrased within Discourse Representation Theory. In the second half of the dissertation, the interpretation of bare nouns in different positions and with different grammatical functions are discussed. Under the independently supported hypothesis of position>interpretation mapping developed by Diesing (1992), we will see the role of the suffix -ra in indicating that an object has been moved out of VP. For subjects, there is no morphological marking corresponding to –ra on objects, and we have to rely on prosody and word order to determine how a VP is interpreted using theories of the interaction of accent and syntactic structure. It is proposed that both subject and object originate within the VP, and can move out to the VP-external domain. The motivation for these movements are informational-structural in nature, relating in particular to the distinctions between given and new information, and default and non-default information structure.

Other ; The comprehension of stories requires the reader to imagine the cognitive and affective states of the characters. The content of many stories is unpleasant, as they often deal with conflict, disturbance or crisis. Nevertheless, unpleasant stories can be liked and enjoyed. In this fMRI study, we used a parametric approach to examine (1) the capacity of increasing negative valence of story contents to activate the mentalizing network (cognitive and affective theory of mind, ToM), and (2) the neural substrate of liking negatively valenced narratives. A set of 80 short narratives was compiled, ranging from neutral to negative emotional valence. For each story mean rating values on valence and liking were obtained from a group of 32 participants in a prestudy, and later included as parametric regressors in the fMRI analysis. Another group of 24 participants passively read the narratives in a three Tesla MRI scanner. Results revealed a stronger engagement of affective ToM-related brain areas with increasingly negative story valence. Stories that were unpleasant, but simultaneously liked, engaged the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), which might reflect the moral exploration of the story content. Further analysis showed that the more the mPFC becomes engaged during the reading of negatively valenced stories, the more coactivation can be observed in other brain areas related to the neural processing of affective ToM and empathy.

Other ; We investigated how processing fluency and defamiliarization (the art of rendering familiar notions unfamiliar) contribute to the affective and esthetic processing of reading in an event-related functional magnetic-resonance-imaging experiment. We compared the neural correlates of processing (a) familiar German proverbs, (b) unfamiliar proverbs, (c) defamiliarized variations with altered content relative to the original proverb (proverb-variants), (d) defamiliarized versions with unexpected wording but the same content as the original proverb (proverb-substitutions), and (e) non-rhetorical sentences. Here, we demonstrate that defamiliarization is an effectiveway of guiding attention, but that the degree of affective involvement depends on the type of defamiliarization: enhanced activation in affect-related regions (orbito-frontal cortex, medPFC) was found only if defamiliarization altered the content of the original proverb. Defamiliarization on the level of wording was associated with attention processes and error monitoring. Although proverb-variants evoked activation in affect-related regions, familiar proverbs received the highest beauty ratings.

The energetic and physiological condition of various ontogenetic stages of Antarctic euphausiids was examined at the onset of winter. Field and experimental data were used to evaluate the relative importance of alternative overwintering strategies for Euphausia superba. Furcilia III larvae had low lipid levels, mainly phospholipids (PL), high metabolic and feeding activities, with the main diet being diatoms. Hence, the larvae exhibited a business as usual strategy. A clearly deviating behaviour was observed in juvenile and adult E. superba, with high lipid depots, mainly as triacylglycerols and PL, and low metabolic and feeding rates as compared to summer values. These data indicated a compromise overwintering strategy between switch feeding and energy conservation for postlarval E. superba.Long-term feeding experiments were carried out to examine the effect of various diets on the lipids and stable isotopes of larval, juvenile, and adult E. superba. Total lipid content, lipid class, fatty acid and stable isotope compositions showed very little variation with the different feeding regimes in postlarval krill. The weak signal of the trophic marker fatty acids was attributed to the large lipid reserves buffering short-term variations in dietary lipid supply on the one hand, and inefficient utilisation of the offered food on the other hand. Furciliae were influenced more strongly by the fatty acid and stable isotope signatures of their food. Changes in fatty acid composition, combined with significant lipid build-up, could be induced experimentally and were also detected in field samples from different locations. The faster growth and the active food utilisation and assimilation of furciliae in conjunction with their lower lipid levels favour the incorporation and detection of trophic biomarkers. The lipid biochemistry of three further Antarctic euphausiids, E. frigida, E. triacantha and Thysanoessa macrura, was studied and discussed in comparison to E. superba.

Research has identified various factors that seem to support L2 acquisition in adults (e.g. duration of stay in an L2 country, amount and quality of input) and it is well known that adult learners can achieve very high competence in their L2s. However, in a multilingual environment or a diglossia situation where inconsistent input can be anticipated, the question arises as to whether L2 acquisition may be influenced by all the different languages that coexist in the same environment. This paper analyses L2 acquisition of Standard German in Switzerland, where different dialectal varieties of Swiss German exist in parallel to the standard variety. The objects of the analysis are interviews in Swiss Standard German in which participants were asked to describe their own language biographies. ; Research has identified various factors that seem to support L2 acquisition in adults (e.g. duration of stay in an L2 country, amount and quality of input) and it is well known that adult learners can achieve very high competence in their L2s. Abstract: Abay Qunanbaev (Qunanbaiuli) was the founder and architect of Kazakh written literature. Since his childhood, he studied religious science and got acquainted with eastern literature, particularly Iranian classic literature and Persian poetry and poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafiz, Sa’adi, Molavi, Nezami and etc.Abay read epic poetry and odes from the great eastern poets on their original texts or Jugatay (old language of central Asia) translations and first raised prosody derived from Persian poetry in Kazakh poetry and this way many Persian vocabulary entered Kazakh language.Using a bibliographic method, the author in current research studies this Kazakh poet’s works from valid and reliable resources. Regarding the special attention paid by this poet to the existing concepts in Persian poetry, particularly those of Ferdowsi, we have attempted to express some of their similarities

Abstract: Dreams are so real that one cannot easily distinguish them from reality. We feel disappointed after waking up from a fascinating dream and rejoice to wake up knowing the nightmare is ended. In some literary works the line between fancy and reality is blurred as well, so it provides the opportunity to ponder on them psychologically. The plot of some of the poems, novels, novellas, dramas and short stories is centered on the minds, thoughts, or generally speaking, human psyche. This essay elaborates upon the "nightmarish"-rather than dreamlike-story, Kafka's A Country Doctor, by applying psychological approach. It seeks to discuss the interpretation of some of the incidents of the story according to Freud's "The Interpretations of Dreams". Also, the id, ego and superego, the three parts of Freudian psychic apparatus, as well as their identification with the related characters are discussed
