    Cigarette smokers with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) may present different response to potent antithrombotic therapy compared to nonsmokers. We assessed the impact of smoking status and intracoronary abciximab in patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We pooled data from 5 randomized trials comparing intracoronary versus intravenous abciximab bolus in patients undergoing primary PCI. The primary end point was the composite of death or reinfarction at a mean follow-up of 292 ± 138 days. Of 3,158 participants, 1,369 (43.3%) were smokers, and they had a lower risk of the primary end point in crude, but not in adjusted analyses (hazard ratio [HR] 0.87, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.63 to 1.21, p = 0.405). Intracoronary versus intravenous abciximab was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of primary end point among smokers (3.6% vs 8.0%; HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.26 to 0.72, p = 0.001), but not in nonsmokers (10.2% vs 9.9%; HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.36, p = 0.96), with a significant interaction (p = 0.009). Furthermore, intracoronary abciximab decreased the risk of reinfarction in smokers (HR 0.30, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.62, p = 0.001), with no difference in nonsmokers (HR 1.20, 95% CI 0.71 to 2.01, p = 0.50). Stent thrombosis was lowered by intracoronary abciximab in smokers (HR 0.28, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.66, p = 0.009), but was ineffective in nonsmokers (HR 1.04, 95% CI 0.54 to 2.00, p = 0.903). Interaction testing showed heterogeneity in treatment effect for reinfarction (p = 0.002) and stent thrombosis (p = 0.018) according to smoking status. In conclusion, among patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI, smoking status did not affect the adjusted risk of clinical events. Intracoronary abciximab bolus improved clinical outcomes by reducing the risk of death or reinfarction.

The red thread which runs through this book is a quest for relative chronology of linguistic developments. The probability of a reconstruction can be judged against the background of the transitions which it implies for the linguistic system as a whole. The reconstructions are always bottom-up, never top-down. It follows that the chapters on Germanic can be read without reference to the Indo-European background and that the Indo-Uralic part of the book can be left out of consideration if one does not want to look beyond Proto-Indo-European. The initial chapters of the book offer an introduction to the background and methodology of the reconstructions with a discussion of the spread of the Indo-Europeans, the role of general linguistics in linguistic reconstruction, the nature of mixed languages, the origin of the Goths, the relations between Indo-European, Uralic and Caucasian languages, and the structure and development of Proto-Indo-European. The following chapters deal with the phonology and morphosyntax of Indo-European, Greek, Indo-Iranian and Tocharian. These are followed by a discussion of Germanic phonology, verb classes, verbal and nominal inflexion, and specific issues in English, German and Scandinavian languages. After a short treatment of Albanian, Armenian, Balto-Slavic and Italo-Celtic topics, the volume is concluded with a discussion of Anatolian and Indo-Uralic phonology and morphosyntax. The book is of interest to students of Germanic, Indo-European and historical linguistics

Nationallizenz frei zugänglich. ; Other ; This publication is with permission of the rights owner freely accessible due to an Alliance licence and a national licence (funded by the DFG, German Research Foundation) respectively. ; Abstract ; This paper proposes a reception-oriented and discursive concept of genre by using the example of „Wutreden“, i. e. public and medially distributed rants and their coverage in (online) media and Web 2.0. On the basis of a corpus of video recordings and transcriptions of Wutreden as well as comments made by journalists and users, it is shown that neither their linguistic features nor their situational functions qualify Wutreden as a distinct genre. Rather, the medial and internet-based recontextualisations of Wutreden build an orienting framework for the reception of discourse. It is these recontextualisations that put disparate speech events in order, so that they can be received as instances of one single genre. The analysis of accompanying discourse like media reports, user comments, and tweets as well as the multimodal surroundings of the respective videos shows, that such documents of reception reflect a genre awareness of Wutreden which will shape their reception as well as the follow-up discourse. The increase of Wutreden in the recent past as appears to be as a result of altered conditions of reception in online environments – conditions, which the linguistic study of genre and genre change within digital media should not neglect.

    A workshop was held in February 2012 in Madrid to stimulate a debate on textual criticism centred on the analysis of Byzantine texts and their modes of publication, rewriting and diffusion. The main aim was to provide future editors or scholars of the history of texts with a rich typology of concepts to guide their task, such as interpolation, paraphrasis, metaphrasis, quotation, collection, amplification or falsification, among others, but always taking into account that the principles upon which the discipline of textual criticism was founded needed to be reconsidered when dealing with the transmission of Byzantine texts. The present book brings together the different case studies produced by the participants of the workshop into a coherent whole and distributes them into five different sections according to their methodological approaches: 1. Language and style; 2. Virtual libraries and crossed readings; 3. Philosophical treatises and collections; 3.The sources of history; 5. Law texts and their reception. The results of the different approaches put forward by the contributors offer a broad palette of methodological strategies that are, to a great extent, complementary, and will, so we hope, illuminate the task of the future editors with new reflections

    When the Werner Reimers Foundation organized a colloquium on Human Ethology in 1977, it was about Claims and Limits of a New Discipline as a bridge between biology and the social sciences and humanities. As a lost discipline, however, the interdisciplinary approach to ethology only takes shape in a dispersed dispositif. This is the framing argument, which derives from the nucleus of ethology, namely that the starting point of all knowledge is the body in its possibilities of movement in time and space to affect and be affected. In their essays (English or German), the contributors to this collection have worked through the heterogeneity of ethological thought – from Spinoza to Jakob von Uexküll, Gregory Bateson, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Philippe Descola, or Isabelle Stengers – and practice – as, for example in the works of Virginia Woolf or Marcel Beyer – and have taken it as an opportunity to relocate ethology, 1) as an “Immanent Ecology”, with essays by Kerstin Andermann, Hanjo Berressem, and Verena Andermatt Conley; 2) in the discussion of “Anthropological Contrasts”, with essays by Marc Rölli, Mirjam Schaub, and Stefan Rieger, and 3) in “Ethological Interferences and Practices,” with essays by Stephan Zandt, Anthony Uhlmann, and Adrian Robanus.     Designed as a contribution to contrastive linguistics, the present volume brings up-to-date the comparison of German with its closest neighbour, Dutch, and other Germanic relatives like English, Afrikaans, and the Scandinavian languages. It takes its inspiration from the idea of a Germanic Sandwich, id est the hypothesis that sets of genetically related languages diverge in systematic ways in diverse domains of the linguistic system. Its contributions set out to test this approach against new phenomena or data from synchronic, diachronic and, for the first time in a Sandwich-related volume, psycholinguistic perspectives. With topics ranging from nickname formation to the IPP (aka Ersatzinfinitiv), from the grammaticalisation of the definite article to /s/-retraction, and from the role of verb-second order in the acquisition of L2 English to the psycholinguistics of gender, the volume appeals to students and specialists in modern and historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, translation studies, language pedagogy and cognitive science, providing a wealth of fresh insights into the relationships of German with its closest relatives while highlighting the potential inherent in the integration of different methodological traditions

    Abstract ; In dieser Masterarbeit wird der Erwerb von Vorfeldbesetzungen durch japanische LernerInnen behandelt. Mithilfe eines Vergleichs von Texten aus zwei verschiedenen A1-DaF-Kursen soll untersucht werden, ob die Vermittlung von Form und Funktion des Vorfelds im Vergleich zur alleinigen Vermittlung der Form von Vorfeldbesetzung einen positiven Einfluss auf den Erwerb hatte. Für die deutsche Verbstellung wird eine (größtenteils) universale Erwerbungsreihenfolge angenommen: SVX > AdvSVX > Verbklammer > XVS > V-End (Clahsen, Meisel & Pienemann 1983). Diese Erwerbsreihenfolge wird im Rahmen der Processability Theory (Pienemann 1998) mit steigender Komplexität der jeweiligen Verarbeitungsprozesse bzw. anhand des morphosyntaktischen Spannungsfelds (Lee 2012) mit steigender Schwierigkeit der Realisierung der SV-Kongruenz erklärt. In dieser Arbeit wird einerseits untersucht, ob die japanischen A1-DaF-LernerInnen in ihren Texten die informationsstrukturelle Funktion des deutschen Vorfelds ausnutzen und auch Nicht-Subjekt-Elemente ins Vorfeld stellen. Andererseits wird ermittelt, ob sie dabei das Verb in die V2-Position setzen und zielsprachliche XVS-Strukturen bilden. Insgesamt stellen die LernerInnen, deren Kurs Form und Funktion des Vorfelds vermittelte, mehr Nicht-Subjekte voran und bildeten dabei erfolgreicher XVS-Sätze als die Vergleichsgruppe. Dies weist darauf hin, dass die Vermittlung von Form und Funktion des Vorfelds einen positiven Einfluss auf den Erwerb zu haben scheint. Die Korrektheitsraten waren allerdings auch von der Art der Schreibaufgabe abhängig, die in den beiden Gruppen nur teilweise übereinstimmten, weshalb diese Ergebnisse mit Vorsicht betrachtet werden müssen. Die hohe Korrektheit der SV-Kongruenz, die hier noch vor dem Erwerb von XVS-Strukturen und unabhängig von der Satzstruktur vorliegt, lässt Fragen in Bezug auf die Gültigkeit der Vorhersagen von Processability Theory und dem morphosyntaktischen Spannungsfeld aufkommen. ; Abstract ; This M.A. thesis treats the acquisition of prefield occupations by Japanese learners. Texts from two different A1 courses of German as a foreign language are compared in order to examine whether the instruction of form and function of the prefield instead of only the form has a positive effect on the acquisition. A (mostly) universal order of acquisition is assumed for German verb placement: SVX > AdvSVX > Verb Bracket > XVS > V-End (Clahsen, Meisel & Pienemann 1983). This order of acquisition is explained through increasing complexity of processing mechanisms in Processability Theory (Pienemann 1998) and through increasing difficulty of realizing SV congruence by means of “morphosyntactic tension” (morphosyntaktisches Spannungsfeld; Lee 2012). On the one hand, it is examined whether Japanese A1 learners make use of the information structural function of the German prefield and place non-subject items in that position. On the other hand, it is examined whether they correctly place the verb in the V2 position and produce XVS structures. In total, the learners who received instruction on form and function of the prefield placed more non-subject items in this position and produced XVS structures with greater success. This finding suggests that instruction of form and function of the prefield has a positive effect on the acquisition of prefield occupations. However, the correctness rates were also dependent on the writing tasks, which were only partially identical in the two groups. Therefore, this finding has to be treated with caution. The high correctness rate of the SV congruence, which is found here before the acquisition of XVS structures and independent of sentence structures, calls into question the validity of the predictions of Processability Theory and the morphosyntaktisches Spannungsfeld.

    This handbook of Old Germanic toponyms is a comprehen-sive collection of Germanic, possibly Germanic and non-Germanic geographical names of Magna Germania and the adjacent provinces. The selection of headwords is based on Hermann Reichert´s Lexikon der altgermanischen Namen (LaN). In the articles, the current state of research concer-ning the localization of the ancient places (, rivers, forests and mountains) and concerning the etymology and word for¬mation of the toponyms is documented and critically dis-cussed. Die vorliegende Monographie behandelt systematisch die altgermanischen Orts-, Fluss-, Wald- und Bergnamen bis einschließlich 600 n.Chr. sowie auch die ungermanischen Toponyme Germaniens; in den einzelnen Artikeln wird neben Lokalisierung und Kontext der mit den Toponymen bezeichneten Örtlichkeiten hauptsächlich die Etymologie der Toponyme selbst in Augenschein genommen und die verschiedenen Deutungsversuche der Namen kritisch beleuchtet. Dieser Band setzt somit die Reihe der Interpretationsbände zu Reichert´s Lexikon der altgermanischen Namen (2 Bde.) fort (zuletzt erschienen: Sitzmann / Grünzweig 2008, Die altgermanischen Ethnonyme - ein Handbuch zu ihrer Etymologie).Der vorliegende Band ist ein umfassendes etymologisches Handbuch der altgermanischen Toponyme sowie der unger-manischen Toponyme Germaniens, wofür als Grundlage das Lexikon der altgermanischen Namen (LaN) von Her-mann Reichert diente. Unter den alphabetisch angeordne-ten Lemmata werden die Belege mit Angabe der wichtigsten Lesarten sowie eine Kurzausführung zu Lokalisierung und Kontext gegeben. In den darauf folgenden etymologischen Kommentaren wurde versucht, einen forschungsgeschichtli-chen Überblick über die Literatur zu den jeweiligen Namen durch ein kritisches Referat der bisher geäußerten etymolo-gischen Deutungen mit Wertung nach Wahrscheinlichkeit zu geben.

    This book presents the development and present status of adaptions of chaos theory for literary studies. Furthermore the integration of these methodological approaches into a discipline that is oriented towards cultural studies is demonstrated. The publication consists of four parts. The first part of the work deals with the issues created through questions posed by historical philosophy and historiography. It discusses how reflections on linear time, as well as on the description and explanation of sequences, circularity and synchronicities lead to an increased complexity in the semanticts of time in the notion of the objects analized. It also discusses the integration of discourses from other disciplines into literary history. It is demonstrated that both aspects - increased complexity and supplementary discourses - are highly influential in hermeneutical literary studies. The second part deals with changes in the notion of time in the modern and so-called post-modern era. It focuses especially on non-linearity, the increasing importance of historical time in the natural sciences and on the effect of this tendency on the analysis of highly complex structures outside of the natural sciences. In the third part of the publication concrete examples of the adaption of chaos theory for literary studies are examined - especially their epistemological interest, their position within the framework of the discipline and their interdisciplinary potential. This part elucidates the potential of focusing on the literary text and its particularities under the premises of chaos theory and how such an interdisciplinary approach helps to bridge the cap between the natural sciences and the humanities. Die Publikation besteht aus vier Teilen, die zum einen die Entwicklung und den aktuellen Stand der Adaption naturwissenschaftlicher chaostheoretischer Konzepte durch die Literaturwissenschaft darstellen. Zum anderen wird die Integration der methodischen Ansätze in die Literaturwissenschaft anhand von Beispielen als theoretisch-methodische Bereicherung einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Ausrichtung der Disziplin erläutert. Der erste Teil der Untersuchung beschäftigt sich mit der Problematisierung von Gegenstandsbereichen durch Fragen der Geschichtsphilosophie und Historiographie. Es wird dargestellt, wie die Diskussion von (linearer) Geschichtszeit, von Beschreibung und Erklärung von Sequenzen, Zirkularität und Gleichzeitigkeiten zur Komplexitätserhöhung nicht nur der Zeitsemantik, sondern auch des Objektbereichs Literatur bzw. Literaturgeschichte und zur Integration von Begleitdiskursen aus anderen Disziplinen in die Literaturgeschichtsschreibung führen. Es wird gezeigt, welche Auswirkungen auf eine hermeneutisch arbeitende Literaturwissenschaft diese Problematisierung historischer Grundlagen hat. Teil 2 beschäftigt sich mit dem Wandel der Zeitkonzepte der Moderne und der sogenannten Postmoderne unter der besonderen Berücksichtigung von erstens Nichtlinearität und zweitens der zunehmenden Bedeutung von historischer Zeit in den Naturwissenschaften.
